OVERVIEW:

Philosophy of the Programme and Description of the Programme:       

The MSc. Nursing programme focuses on producing highly competent nurse specialists with appropriate skills, knowledge and attitudes capable of addressing local and global healthcare needs, research and nursing education challenges through innovative solutions and evidence-based approaches.

Goal of the Programme:

The goal of the programme is to produce competent Nurse Specialists capable of providing specialized clinical care, conducting research, teaching and providing organizational leadership in order to meet the heath care sector needs in Kenya and globally, while utilizing evidence-based approaches.

Admission Requirements:

  1. The general regulations for all Masters degrees in the Meru University of Science and Technology (MUST) and the Board of Post Graduate Studies shall apply
  2. Holders of Bachelor of Science Nursing and Bachelor of Science in Midwifery from MUST or other universities recognized by the Senate.
  3. Registered by the Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK).
  4. Holders of a valid nurse practice license.
  5. Must have at least two years’ relevant work experience.
  6. For international students, the academic certificate must be certified by CUE and the nursing practice license be verified by the NCK.

 

Programme Learning Objectives (PLOs):

Upon completion of the MSc. in Nursing programme, the learner should be able to:

  • Integrate nursing science, ethics, psychosocial approaches, analytical skills and organizational resources to provide the highest level of specialty nursing practices.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate healthcare practices and systems that ensure quality improvement and patient safety.
  • Use analytic methods and evidence based practices to improve patient outcomes in various practice environments.
  • Implement and evaluate ethical healthcare information systems and patient care technology to improve the quality of patient health outcomes and care systems.
  • Advocate for healthcare practices that advance social justice, equity, and ethical policies within all healthcare.

Specialization specific programme Learning Outcomes

Medical Surgical Nursing

  1. To demonstrate ability to use evidence based practice in the implementation of clinical practice in adult nursing.
  2. To apply competencies in research, nursing administration and policy development and implementation in adult nursing.

 

Midwifery

  1. To utilize innovative frameworks for clinical leadership and policy making that is critical for any midwife in practice.
  2. To apply scientific based models for safe nurse-midwifery care using sound clinical judgment to care for women in the context of her family.

Community Health Nursing

  1. To coordinate all health activities ranging from primary to rehabilitative care for improvement of the health of the individuals, families and communities.
  2. To formulate policies and action plans for effective management of community health projects and programmes.

Nursing Education

  1. To equip the learners with the knowledge and skills to effectively train nurses using participatory learning approaches.
  2. To prepare learners to be educators who can provide quality training and education needed to meet the health demands of the rapidly increasing population.

Paediatric nursing

  1. To deliver evidence-based and family-centered care to paediatric populations in different care setups.
  2. To investigate through nursing research and utilize the findings from health related research to solve health-related challenges in paediatric nursing.

Oncology nursing

  1. To integrate critical thinking, evidenced based nursing and nursing process in the management of patients of patients on the cancer continuum of care.
  2. To deliver evidence based and person centered palliative care for patients with life limiting conditions and their families.
